Providence, R.I. -- The 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey team opened conference play with a bang, shutting out BIG EAST foe Providence, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at Hendricken Field on the campus of Boston College. With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-3 overall (1-0 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Friars fall to 5-3 (0-1 BIG EAST).
The Eagles netted a single goal in each half to halt the Friars' four-game win streak. With just over five minutes to play in the first half, BC drew first blood as Kerri Doherty's (Lynnfield, Mass.) initial penalty corner shot was corralled by Sara York (Watertown, Mass.) and put back for the score. It was York's seventh goal of the season.
In the second half, BC capitalized on another penalty corner for the score. This time, senior Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.) connected for the score, once again off a Doherty initial shot. Eagle goaltender Lauren Hill (Bethesda, Md.) collected seven saves in net while Providence goaltender Meaghan Moran tallied 10.
The Eagles will return to action Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Syracuse. It will mark Alumni Day for Boston College.
