Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- The 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey team collected a 3-1 BIG EAST win Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium, celebrating its first Alumni Weekend with style. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-3 overall (2-0 BIG EAST) on the season. The Orangewomen fall to 3-6 (0-2 BIG EAST).
The Eagles collected a goal in a dominating first half. Outshooting Syracuse 9-1, BC capitalized on a penalty corner play for the 1-0 halftime margin. Sara York (Watertown, Mass.) connected on a nice feed from Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and an initial entry by Lauren Schultz (New Milford, Conn.).
Freshman Tara Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) scored what would stand as the game winner, with the assist once again going to French. With just over 16 minutes left in regulation, the score was the first of her collegiate career. Syracuse answered back to cut the deficit in half, behind a nice, strong shot by Michelle Sola. York, however, would strike back with six seconds left, lifting a beautiful shot over the goalkeeper's head for the final 3-1 count.
Lauren Hill (Bethesda, Md.) collected five saves in net for the winners while Betsy Wagner made nine stops for Syracuse.
The Eagles will return to action Wednesday night in a 7:00 p.m. home tilt with Rhode Island.
