Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- The 16th-ranked Boston College field hockey team collected a 5-0 shutout win over Rhode Island Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium in a non-conference match-up. With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-3 overall (2-0 BIG EAST) on the season. The Rams fall to 4-7.
The Eagles wasted no time as they charged out of the gate with their first goal just 48 seconds into the game. Junior Kerri Kulesza (Spencer, Mass.) scored what would stand as the game-winning goal, but the Eagles would strike once more before the halftime intermission and another three times in the second stanza. Halfway through the first half, sophomore back Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) netted the first of her two goals on the evening. She was assisted on the play by senior captain Virginia Drozd (Richmond, Va.).
In the second half, BC strung together three goals to go ahead by the final 5-0 margin. The first goal, scored by Sabrina Lazzari (Weston, Mass.) and assisted by Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario), came at the 46:53 mark while the game's final goal was scored at the stick of Kelly with eight minutes left. Sandwiched in between was Madden's second goal, assisted by Kerri Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.).
Lauren Hill (Bethesda, Md.) posted her fifth shutout of the season with the win.
The Eagles will return to action Sunday afternoon in another non-conference game at Brown (12:00 noon). They will return to Alumni Stadium on October 12 when they host Holy Cross.
