CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team looks to use the momentum generated from their 1-0 win over Big Ten power Ohio State to maintain their winning ways when the Eagles host BIG EAST foe Georgetown at the Newton Campus Soccer Field Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Eagles rebounded from a tough 2-1 loss to Penn State in the first game of last weekend's Penn State Nike Classic to top The Ohio State University Buckeyes, 1-0. In a game in which the Eagles started five freshmen, winger Jamen Amato (Pasadena Polytechnic/Pasadena, Calif.) connected with the game's lone goal when he ripped home a blast from the top of the box.
Goaltender Issey Maholo, a freshman from Tokyo, Japan (St. Mary's International) recorded the shutout in his Eagle debut stopping four shots while freshman Sam Brill (Newton North/Newton, Mass.) earned All-Tournament Team accolades after an impressive performance in his first start for the Eagles.
Freshmen midfielders Jarryd Goldberg (Ridge/Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Richie Gavilanes (St. Benedict's Prep/Orange N.J.) have started all five games since their arrival at the Heights and have tallied one assist apiece.
The victory improved the Eagles record to 2-3-0 overall while they remain 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Hoyas, 2-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST, are coming off a 3-1 win over Towson. Their offense is powered freshman Ricky Schramm who has tallied five goals on 15 shots in six games for Georgetown. Dan Gargan, Jess Curtin and Dan Pydo have two goals and two assists apiece. Senior tender Tim Hogan has started all six games between the posts and registered a 1.40 goals-against average and a .750 save percentage.
Georgetown holds on to 8-7 advantage in the series against the Eagles, but BC has won the last four meetings, including a 3-1 win over the Hoyas at North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C. last year.
