CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Having entered the thick of the race for the final spot at the BIG EAST Championships, thanks to its three-game sweep of Pittsburgh last weekend, the baseball team heads to Jamaica, N.Y., May 10-11 for a three-game series against St. John's.
After going 5-1 last week, the Eagles' overall record now stands at 28-18, including a 10-8 BIG EAST mark, which puts them in fifth place in the conference standings. Virginia Tech holds the fourth spot, after having swept the Red Storm (24-24, 9-11 BE) in a three-game series last weekend. (BIG EAST standings)
Last season, Boston College took two of three from St. John's on April 27 and 29 in Chestnut Hill. Sophomore Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) earned a complete-game victory in a 4-3 series-opening win, and the Eagles unleashed a 16-hit barrage in the second contest, resulting in an 8-2 BC victory. In the series finale, the Red Storm scored two runs in the top of the 10th to claim an 8-6 win.

NOTES
HUGHES GETS 200TH
Boston College's 8-1 win over Pittsburgh last Sunday marked the 200th in the seven-year coaching career of Pete Hughes. He won 52 games in two years at Trinity University in Texas and has 148 while at the helm of the Eagles. Hughes' lifetime record is 200-136-1, good for a .595 winning percentage.
NEAR NO-NOS
Sophomore Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) has flirted with no-hitters the last two times he has taken the hill. Against Seton Hall on April 27, Lambert held the Pirates hitless for 5.2 inning before giving up a double. He finished with a complete-game three-hitter. Last Saturday against Pittsburgh, Lambert gave up just a second-inning bunt single in tossing his first career one-hitter, which earned him his third BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week nod. Of the four hits Lambert has allowed in his last 14 innings of work, two have been bunts.
DELANEY RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY
The Web site CollegeBaseballInsider.com singled out sophomore Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) last week. Delaney received Northeast Player of the Week honors after going 14-for-22 (.636) with two homers, seven RBI and nine runs as the Eagles went 5-1, including capturing the Beanpot championship. Delaney was 5-for-8 with a home run, three RBI and five runs in the Beanpot wins over Northeastern and Harvard. He followed that with back-to-back four-hit games, including hitting for the cycle against Seton Hall.
