BOSTON - Junior Paul Chase (Weymouth, Mass.) received the 20th annual Thomas McElroy Award at the men's soccer team's annual awards banquet Friday, April 25 at the Boston College Club.
Also taking home team honors were sophomore Guy Melamed (Nofit, Israel), who was named team most valuable player, and freshman Brendon Ferullo (Northboro, Mass.), who received most improved player accolades.
The McElory Award is presented annually to "...the Boston College soccer student-athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of courage, dedication, sincerity and determination of Tom McElory."
The award is presented in honor of Tom McElroy, Jr. '80. In his career at the Heights, McElroy walked onto the team, converted from midfield to goalkeeper and helped lead the Eagles to an ECAC soccer championship - the school's first soccer title.
In January of his senior year, McElroy learned that he was suffering from cancer. Undeterred, he played his final season of college soccer. Only McElroy, head coach Ben Brewster and Director of Athletics Bill Flynn were aware of his condition.
Chase, an All-BIG EAST Third Team honoree, played in 22 of the team's 23 games last fall, finishing with six points (one goal, four assists).
A defender, Melamed became just the third player in program history to earn NSCAA All-America honors, landing a spot on the third team. He also was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Melamed tied for second on the team in goals (six), tied for third in game-winning goals (three) and ranked fifth in points (12).
After playing in just six of the Eagles' first 21 games, Ferullo, a midfielder, saw time in Boston College's NCAA third-round game against SMU and started its quarterfinals match versus Creighton, taking two shots in the latter.
