Tucson, Ariz. - The Boston College softball team rebounded to win its first game in the loser's bracket Friday morning at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium on the campus of University of Arizona. The Eagles blanked Princeton, 6-0, to improve to 34-21 on the season. Tonight at 10:00 p.m. EST, the Eagles will now face Minnesota.
BC led from the start and never relinquished command of the game. The Eagles struck for a a single run in the first, two in the second, and single runs in the third, fourth, and seventh. Behind the solid pitching of Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.), the Eagles capitalized for the win. Daly scattered six hits and received superb defensive help from her teammates as she improved to 6-5 on the season.
With two outs, BC mounted a first-inning rally as Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) walked. Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) and Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) kept the rally going with back-to-back singles. Mackey's single drove in Blumfield for the game's first run. In the second inning, Elena Ferrero (Van Nuyrs, Calif.) belted an RBI double that scored Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.), who had reached on a single. Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) collected and RBI single of her own, scoring Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) who had collected one of BC's five hits in the inning.
Fererro and Asbury accounted for the next two BC runs with a sacrifice fly and a single followed by a Princeton throwing error. The final Eagle run was knocked in by Amy Swiderski (Tucson, Ariz.). In front of her hometown crowd, Swiderski went first-pitch hitting and smacked a pinch-hit double that scored Mackey.
BC will play Minnesota tonight at 10:00 p.m. EST.
