CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston College women's rowing made great strides towards Northeastern University in their second race against them Saturday morning on the Charles River. Dartmouth who was originally on the schedule was unable to attend the competition due to the heavy snow fall they received in New Hampshire.
The 2,000 meter race course on the Charles River basin was deemed unrowable due to high wind generated from winter storm conditions. All races were moved to the powerhouse stretch reducing the course length to approximately 1300 meters with a floating start. The varsity four event was cancelled due to a thunderstorm.
The varsity eight raced competitively against Northeastern. Although Northeastern took approximately 3/4 of a length in the start, BC was able to keep its contact with Northeastern through the body of the piece. In the last 500 meters, BC made a strong move to gain half a length. The varsity eight finished 4:52.8, approximately 1/4 length down and only 1.6 seconds behind Northeastern (4:51.2). It was an impressive row, as the crew showed that they were in reach of a win against Northeastern, who beat them by a 12 second margin only one week earlier. Line-up: Anne Nelson, Amelia Stephens, Tess Casey, Katie Stainken, Laura Bustos, Liz Millar, Kelly Griffin, Cate Boron and Vicky Haley (coxswain).
The second varsity crew had a tight race against the Northeastern's second varsity eight and first novice eight. Both Northeastern crews had a strong start, but BC pulled ahead of at the midway point. The Eagles maintained their slight lead going into the last 200 meters and held off the Northeastern novice's sprint to win by a seat. The Eagles finished with a winning time of 5:00.3, a second ahead of the Northeastern crew (5:01.4). Line-up: Amanda Wood, Amy Boyle, Steph Guertin, Megan Olmstead, Sarah Burns, Colleen Hughes, Erin MacKay, Meghan Anson and Lauren Ippolito (coxswain).
In the novice eight event, the Eagles novice finished with a time of 5:14.1 ahead of the Northeastern second novice crew who finished with a time of 5:19.8. Line-up: Jamie Lavin, Lauren Faricy, Brae Holdridge, Carla Pherson, Kate Nowell, Caroline Cromwell, Sara Porter, Megan Hatch and Kate Donovan (coxswain).
"Our team showed tremendous heart today. Northeastern's varsity eight was just voted number 18 in the country, and they are consistently one of the strongest programs in our region. With the one exception being the cancellation of the fours race, it was a great day for the program," said Head Coach Steve Fiske.
The Eagles will return to action this weekend at the Knecht Cup in Camden, NJ.
