Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader with Villanova Sunday afternoon at Shea Field on the campus of Boston College. The Eagles topped the Wildcats 5-2 in the first game before giving up a 6-1 lead in the second game to fall 10-7 in nine innings. Boston College currently stands at 14-13 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
In the first game, BC scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. The team added another run in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Senior second baseman Jen Asbury (Livermore, Calif.) belted a two-out two-run homerun in the third inning for the first two runs of the game. An inning later, Erin Mackey (River Forest, Ill.) and Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) belted back-to-back singles With two outs, freshman Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.) reached on an error, scoring Field and Mackey.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) collected the win on the mound, pitching a complete game. She allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
In game two, BC went up a quick 4-0 in the first inning behind a grand slam by Mackey. The Eagles added another run in the second when Asbury's fielder's choice knocked in Allain. Villanova made up a run in the third inning and used a five-inning seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead. BC tied the game on a Mackey single to left field, but Villanova struck back with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to steal the win.
Malandris took the loss on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings of relief. She struck out three while allowing two hits and three runs.
Boston College is next scheduled to host Dartmouth in a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
