Baseball Drops Pair of Games To Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The baseball team suffered two costly setbacks Saturday, April 19 at Class of '53 Complex, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Rutgers, 4-2 and 7-3.
With the defeats, the Eagles fall to 18-16 overall and 5-7 in the BIG EAST.
In the first game, Boston College put two runs on the board in the top of the first. With one out, senior right fielder Matt Lederhos (Westwood, Mass.) drilled a single to center, plating junior second baseman Josh DiScipio (Schenectady, N.Y.), and sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) later scored on a throwing error by the Rutgers third baseman.
Rutgers (16-14, 10-3) struck right back in the bottom of the frame with two runs of its own. Second baseman Matt Wolski drove in one with a bases-loaded infield single, while the second run came in on a bases-loaded walk.
The Scarlet Knights took a 3-2 lead in the third when right fielder Jeff Frazier crossed the plate on a 5-4-3 double play.
Senior starting pitcher Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) got into trouble in the fourth, putting runners on the corners with one out. Junior righty Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.) came to relieve him, and he got the next two batters to pop out and ground into a fielder's choice.
In the sixth, Boston College put runners on second and third with two outs, but Rutgers starting pitcher Jack Egbert fanned senior designated hitter Vinny Scavone (Seffner, Fla.) to extinguish the threat.
Pinch hitter Colin Gaynor extended his team's lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right-center.
Egbert pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
Locke had two hits for the third consecutive game.
In the nightcap, Rutgers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, pushing across a run without a base hit. Leadoff hitter Graig Badger walked, stole second, went to third on a dropped fly ball and scored on an error by the BC first baseman.
Frazier kept the Eagles off the board in the top of the second. With two outs and third baseman Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) on second, DiScipio lined a single to right. Frazier came up firing and gunned down Delaney at the plate.
The Scarlet Knights put up a four-spot in the second to increase their bulge to 5-0. Gaynor hit an RBI single, while left fielder Jeff Grose came up with the big blow, a three-run homer to right-center.
Boston College had a chance to put some runs on the board in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but Rutgers starter Shaun Parker got junior left fielder Eric Wright (Westboro, Mass.) to ground out to second.
Frazier prevented another Eagle run from scoring in the sixth when, with two outs and a runner on second, he made a diving stab of a Delaney liner.
The Eagles finally broke through with three runs in the seventh, two on a pinch-hit double by sophomore Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.) and one on a bases-loaded walk by sophomore first baseman Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.).
RBI singles by Wolski and Badger in the seventh and eighth, respectively, gave the Scarlet Knights a 7-3 lead and some breathing room.
Boston College left 11 runners on base in the game.
The Eagles take on Northeastern in the first round of the Beanpot at Fenway Park on Tuesday, April 22 at 5 p.m.
