Cooper River, N.J. - The Boston College women's rowing team competed at the Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova University this weekend on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. More than 30 universities and colleges attended the regatta.
Preliminary heats and semi-final races took place on Saturday, the first of two days of competition. All Eagles boats advanced to grand or petite finals on Sunday.
The varsity 8 had a strong weekend, winning their preliminary heat, placing second in their semi-final to UMass, and placing 5th in the Grand final on Sunday. In the Grand Final, the Eagles finished only 7 seconds off of first place finisher West Virginia. Rowing for the Eagles was stroke Anne Nelson, followed by Amelia Stephens, Tess Casey, Katie Stainken, Laura Bustos, Liz Milliar, Kelly Griffin and Cate Boron. The boat was coxed by Vicky Haley.
The second varsity 8 took home a silver medal at the competition, placing behind The University of Wisconsin. Senior Lauren Ippolitio coxed this crew for BC consisting of stroke Amanda Wood, followed by Martha Tierney, Steph Guertin, Megan Olmstead, Sarah Burns, Amy Boyle, Erin MacKay, and Meghan Anson in bow.
Team captain, Martha Tierney, was very excited about the strong racing of her crew. "In the final race we had out best start of the season. We got off the line well and really jumped out. Our real strength is in the middle of the race though. We show that we can stay mentally tough and really pound it out," said Tierney.
The varsity four had a strong race taking a forth place finish in the petite finals with a time of 8:27. The four gained speed on Villanova through the weekend, finishing 6 seconds behind in the heat and 4 seconds behind in the final. They are looking forward to another race against Villanova at the Big East Rowing Challenge on April 27th. This crew was coxed by Sabrina Peter and included stroke Kendall Hoekstra, Brianne Moskovitz, Lindsay Jansen, and Lauren Lehane. The second varsity 4 also raced hard, coming in sixth place in the Grand Finals. In the Eagle's boat was Liz Logan, Colleen Hughes, Jessica Rouge, Kim Dugan, and Betsy Juarez as the coxswain.
The Novice 8 placed 5th in the petite final behind winner University of North Carolina. The University of Wisconsin won the event in the grand final. The Eagles' boat was stroked by Jamie Lavin, followed by Lauren Faircy, Brae Holdridge, Carla Pherson, Kate Nowell, Caroline Cromwell, Sara Porter, and Megan Hatch in bow. The coxswain was Kate Donovan. Tierney was proud of the team's overall performance this weekend. "Everyone on the team took something positive away from this weekend. Even though none of the boats came in first, we all learned something that we can improve on and do better next week. We also were able to see the things that we did well and will keep on doing. The race was a great leaping off point for the Big East Challenge. We know we can definitely compete with the other Big East schools. We finished ahead of a lot of tough competition in the race."
