CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The baseball team looks to continue its winning ways this week as it plays a game against Central Connecticut State on Tuesday at 7 p.m., and follows that up with back-to-back BIG EAST doubleheaders against Villanova (3/3) and Notre Dame (3/4). The Eagles (12-9, 2-1 BIG EAST) have won their last four games, defeating the likes of Holy Cross, Central Connecticut State and Hartford (in a doubleheader).
The contest versus CCSU (10-4) is tonight at 7 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass. The March 4 twinbill against the Fighting Irish (16-6, 5-1 BE) will also be held at Campanelli Stadium. First pitch is at 2 p.m. A time and location for the Villanova doubleheader on March 3 is yet to be determined. Check back at BCEagles.com for updates.
The Eagles and Blue Devils met last week, with BC coming away with a 9-3 win. The team pounded out 16 hits -- six coming in the decisive sixth inning, in which Boston College scored four runs. The 16 hits tied a season high for the Eagles.
Last season Boston College went a combined 1-5 against Villanova (6-13, 1-4 BE) and Notre Dame, dropping two of three to the Wildcats and getting swept by the Irish in a season-ending three-game series. In the Eagles' win over 'Nova, on April 20, 2002, sophomore Chris Lambert (Manchester, N.H.) gave up one run on four hits in six innings to earn his seventh win of the year.
LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
3/25 - Boston College 8, Holy Cross 4
3/27 - Boston College 9, CCSU 3
3/29 - Boston College 16-3, Hartford 2-2
NOTES
MASTER LOCKE
Sophomore Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.), the BIG EAST's second-leading hitter last season, got off to a slow start this year, but he has really come on lately. In his first 14 games he hit .273 (15-for-55) with a home run, seven RBIs and six runs scored. In the seven games since, he is 10-for-25 (.400) with two home runs, five RBIs and a whopping 12 runs scored. His slugging and on base percentages over that span are .880 and .559, respectively, and he has walked nine times while striking out just once.
DYNAMIC DUO
Pitchers Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) and Lambert are just sophomores, but already they're leaving their mark on Boston College's career top-ten lists. The duo is 1-2 in earned run average among pitchers who logged at least 100 innings in their careers. Lambert sports a 3.03 career ERA while Shepard is at 3.35. Lambert is also sixth in career strikeouts (125) and eighth in wins (12).
HIT PARADE
Before BC's last game, a 3-2 win over Hartford on Saturday, the Eagles had amassed double-digit hit totals in five straight games. Boston College banged out 12, 11, 13, 16 and 16 hits in those games, in which they went 3-2. The 16 hits tie a season high. The first time they reached that total was March 6 in a 13-11 win over Valparaiso.
STREAKY EAGLES
This year's team has shown a tendency to go through extended stretches of success and failure. It started the season dropping six of its first seven games, then won its next seven, then lost its last three, and now has won its last four.
LUCKY 13
In the lastest CollegeBaseballInsider.com regional poll, released March 25, Boston College is ranked No. 13 in the Northeast.
