Softball Duo Takes Home Weekly Conference Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Boston College senior short stop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) and senior pitcher Kim Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) collected a share of the conference's weekly awards this week. Blumfield was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week while Ryan was named BIG EAST Co-Pitcher of the Week. It is the second consecutive honor for Blumfield while Ryan takes home her first nod of the 2003 season.
Blumfield helped the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 record this past week, winning their first three games at their home Shea Field. She compiled a .571 batting average for the week, including a .600 average in her team's two conference victories. She hit the game winning home run in a 2-0 shutout of Maine and collected two RBI in the BIG EAST opening doubleheader with Providence (3-1 and 6-0).
Ryan made two appearances on the mound this week, collecting a 2-0 record with an impressive 0.78 earned run average. She pitched two innings against Maine, collecting four strikeouts and allowing just one hit. Three days later, she collected 14 strikeouts while allowing just one hit en route to pitching a complete-game win over Providence (3-1).
The Eagles are currently 12-12 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
This week, the Eagles travel to Quinnipiac on April 1 in a game postponed from March. The team will then host Harvard in a single game Thursday at 3:00 p.m. on Shea Field. Over the weekend, BC will host a pair of BIG EAST doubleheaders, facing off against Rutgers Saturday (12:00) and Villanova Sunday (12:00).
