CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston College women's rowing team competed in their second spring race of the season Saturday morning on the Charles River. The Eagles competed against Northeastern University and Rutgers University and took home a first and second place finish.
The varsity eight rowed a strong race but could not quite catch Northeastern. Northeastern jumped ahead of the field with an impressive start and held their lead through the race, finishing with a time of 7:22.0. The Eagles finished in third place behind Rutgers, with a time of 7:34.1. The line-up of the varsity eight was Anne Nelson (Plano, Tex.), Amelia Stephens (Stone Ridge, Md.), Stephanie Guertin (Bedford, N.H.), Katie Stainken (Hillsborough, N.J.), Tess Casy (Concord, N.H.), Liz Millar (Marmora, N.J.), Kelly Griffin (Natick, Mass.), Cate Boron (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Vicky Haley (Arlington Heights, Ill.) as coxswain.
"We met up with two crews today in the varsity 8 who absolutely came to race. It was hopefully a wake up call for our varsity which certainly has the potential to be competitive with both of these teams. We look forward to another race with Northeastern next weekend." Said Head Coach Steve Fiske.
The Second Varsity 8 had a competitive race finishing in second place with a time of 7:48.4, seven seconds behind first place Northeastern. BC made a strong push in the middle of the race to pull ahead of Rutgers and move into Northeastern's lead. These margins remained until the sprint, during which Northeastern pulled ahead by a couple of seconds. Competing in the Eagle's 2nd Varsity were Amanda Wood (Saratoga Springs N.Y.), Amy Boyle (Phillipsburg, N.J.), Laura Bustos (Chicago, Ill.), Megan Olmstead (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Sarah Burns (Londonville, N.Y.), Martha Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.), Erin MacKay (Skillman, N.J.), Meghan Anson (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and coxswain Lauren Ippolito (Middletown, N.J.).
BC placed first in the Varsity four event with a time of 8:32.9, seven seconds ahead of second place Northeastern. BC and Northeastern pulled ahead of Rutgers at the start. The Eagles held off numerous pushes by Northeastern during the first thousand meters and pulled away at the 1500 meter mark to finish ahead by open water. The Eagles in the varsity four were Kendall Hoekstra (Manlius, N.Y.), Brianne Moskovitz (Belmont, Calif.), Lindsay Jansen (St. Paul, Minn.), Liz Logan (Lowell, Mass.) and Sabrina Peter (Oshkosh, Wis.) as coxswain.
In the 3rd Varsity four event the Eagles finished in second place behind Northeastern, with a time of 9:17.0. Rowing in the four were Colleen Hughes (Philadelphia, Pa.), Lauren Lehane (St. Davids, Pa.), Kim Dugan (Dedham, Mass.), Kaitlin Plunket (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and coxswain Courtney Barrows (Danvers, Mass.). The Novice 8 finished in third place with a time of 8:44.4.
