Redshirt freshman Jeff Ross (Lowell) carried the ball 16 times for 74 yards in Boston College's first full scrimmage of the 2003 spring football season. Ross led all rushers in the 110-play, 90-minute event Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
"The intensity was very good," head coach Tom O'Brien said. "We have a bunch of young kids trying to learn, and you can tell which players have the experience. As our young players get better, the entire team will improve."
O'Brien decided to sit out senior running back Derrick Knight for the scrimmage. Quarterback Quinton Porter (shoulder) and running back Horace Dodd (hamstring) also watched from the sideline.
In Porter's absence, a pair of freshmen quarterbacks took all the snaps. Walk-on Dan Berglund (Shorewood, MN) completed 15 of 24 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown on the day, a 17-yard toss to junior Grant Adams (Glen Rock, NJ), who led all receivers with five catches for 60 yards. Redshirt freshman QB Karim El Nokali (Pittsburgh, PA) completed 14 of 23 passes for 117 yards.
Eleven different Eagles were on the receiving end of those passes, led by Adams and tight ends Dave Kashetta (Westport, CT) with four catches for 44 yards and Sean Ryan (Buffalo, NY) who had three grabs for 36 yards. Sophomore tight end Chris Miller (Upper Arlington, Ohio) caught two passes for 30 yards, and redshirt freshman Jason Lilly (Dover, DE) caught three for 27 yards.
Senior All-BIG EAST placekicker Sandro Sciortino (Markham, Ontario) connected on field goals of 38, 39, 43 and 44 yards. In addition to Ross, junior Everett Lee (Philadelphia, PA) carried 12 times for 22 yards while redshirt freshman Taylor Sele (Richmond Hill, NY) carried the ball 11 times for 18 yards.
The Eagles will scrimmage again on Saturday, April 5 in preparation for the annual Jay McGillis Spring Game on April 12.
