CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Julie Spolidoro (Duxbury, Mass.) will take part in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held March 14-15 at Randall Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The 5,000 is scheduled to go off Friday at 7:20 p.m. while the 3,000 gets underway Saturday at 7:25 p.m.
She is trying to become just the second women's track athlete from Boston College to be crowned national champion. Shannon Smith '01 won the NCAA 3,000-meter championship in 2001.
Spolidoro owns the third-fastest 5,000 time in the country this year, clocking a 16:02.99 at the Terrier Invitational on Jan. 24. That time broke the school record -- previously owned by sophomore Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) -- by more than 10 seconds.
She will also appear in the 3,000, courtesy of the 9:18.11 she turned in Feb. 8 at a tri-meet against Boston University and Providence. That time represents the 17th-fastest turned in this year and the second-fastest ever at BC.
