NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The fourth-ranked men's hockey team was defeated by Merrimack, 6-1, Saturday night in front of 2,753 at the Volpe Center. The loss drops BC to 19-8-3 (14-5-1 HEA), while Merrimack improves to 12-13-5 (7-10-3 HEA).
Despite being outshot 11-3 in the first period, Merrimack took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after one.
After increasing its lead to 3-0 after two periods, Merrimack scored a quick goal 28 seconds into the third period for a 4-0 advantage.
Freshman Stephen Gionta scored the Eagles' lone goal at 4:13 of the third period. Gionta collected a rebound of a Brett Peterson shot from the point for his fourth goal of the season. Junior Tony Voce also registered an assist on the goal.
Merrimack forward Marco Rosa registered a natural hat trick.
Senior Tim Kelleher made 18 saves for BC while Merrimack goalie Joe Exter made 27 stops.
The Eagles return to action Friday, Feb. 21, when they host Northeastern. Game time is 7 p.m.
