Senior co-captain Augie Hoffmann was named the winner of the Scanlan Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College football player, at the team's annual Scanlan Awards Banquet, held Sunday afternoon at the Sheraton Hotel in Needham. Senior tailback Derrick Knight was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates for the second year in a row.
The Scanlan Award goes to a BC football player who exhibits leadership on the football field, in the classroom, and as a citizen, leader and friend. Hoffmann, a key member of the Eagles' offensive line for the past four seasons, was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District I team.
Knight, a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, rushed for 1,599 yards this season and became BC's all-time rushing leader at the Virginia Tech game. Knight has rushed for 3,603 yards in his BC career and passed the previous record holder, Mike Cloud, who rushed for 3,597 yards.
Other award winners Sunday afternoon included Sean Ryan (Gridiron Club Award); Brian Flores (Unsung Hero Award); Tom Martin (Coaches' Award); Josh Ott (Paul Cavanaugh Memorial Award); Paul Cook (Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship); Will Blackmon (Special Teams Award); and Jolonn Dunbar, Ryan Mattison and Leonard Bennett (Scout Team Award).
