ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands -- Senior forward Uka Agbai netted a game-high 21 points to lead five BC players in double figures as the Eagles opened their 2003-04 schedule with a convincing 92-67 win over Appalachian State in the Paradise Jam.
Agbai, playing his first regular-season game since suffering a season-ending neck injury last December, shot 9-for-12 from the field. He also tied for team-high rebounding honors with seven. Freshman Jared Dudley also grabbed seven rebounds.
Joining Agbai in double figures were sophomore Craig Smith (12 points), freshman Steve Hailey (11), junior Jermaine Watson (10) and sophomore Louis Hinnant (10). Smith shot 6-for-8 from the floor and also contributed six rebounds and four assists. Hailey handed out a team-high six assists.
Boston College shot 61.4 percent (35-for-57) from the field -- 58.6 percent in the first half and 64.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.
BC led 40-29 at halftime. Agbai had 10 first-half points, while Smith added eight. The Eagles extended their advantage to 21 points -- 54-33 -- less than four minutes into the second half. The Eagles never looked back and widened the margin to 30 points on two free throws by junior Nate Doornekamp with 12:32 to play.
Game Notes: All 13 players saw action, including nine who played 11 or more minutes. Agbai played a team-high 32 minutes ... BC registered an impressive 22 assists on 35 field goals ... Hinnant hit back-to-back three-pointers early in the second half (with 18:58 and 17:53 remaining), before going down with an injury to his left wrist with 17:30 remaining in the contest. Hinnant's status for tomorrow night's game against Monmouth is uncertain ... BC will play Monmouth on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (Eastern time) ... Freshman Sean Marshall made his first career start in his first collegiate game. He finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes of action ... Joining Marshall in the starting line-up were Agbai, Smith, Hinnant and Dudley.
