Providence, R.I. - Two running backs - Derrick Knight of Boston College and Quincy Wilson of West Virginia - have been named BIG EAST Offensive Players of the Week, the league announced. West Virginia linebacker Grant Wiley earned defensive honors, while Nate Jones of Rutgers was chosen as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Knight (Rockland, Mass.) wins offensive honors after leading BC to a 35-25 victory at Rutgers. The senior running back rushed for a career-high 224 yards and three touchdowns. The three scores matched his season total entering the game as he finished with 8.3 yards per carry. Knight also had one reception for six yards. He leads the BIG EAST in rushing with 127.5 yards per game.
With 16 career games of 100 or more yards, Knight tied Edgerrin James of Miami for fourth on the all-time Big East list for 100-yard rushing games. He now has 3,406 career yards, just 191 short of all-time rushing leader Mike Cloud at 3,597.
Wilson (Weirton, W. Va.) ran for a career-best 208 yards in West Virginia's 52-31 win over Pittsburgh. The senior running back scored four times, also a career standard. His rushing total tied for the eighth-best single game performance in Mountaineer history, as he posted 6.1 yards per carry. Wilson also had two receptions for 22 yards.
Wiley (Trappe, Pa.) garners defensive accolades after recording 15 tackles (eight solo) in the WVU win. The senior linebacker also had an interception in the end zone that stalled a Panther drive in the third quarter. He added two tackles for loss, one sack and a pass break-up. Wiley led a Mountaineer defense that held Pittsburgh to just 10 rushing yards, the fourth time this season West Virginia has held its opponent under 100 yards rushing.
Jones (Scotch Plains, N.J.) recorded his first kickoff for a touchdown this season in the Scarlet Knights' loss to Boston College. The senior posted his longest run of the year when he scampered 81 yards for a score in the second quarter. He finished with two returns for 102 yards. It was his third career kickoff return for a touchdown. Jones also forced a fumble on special teams, causing the BC punter to lose the ball and give RU field position that led to a Scarlet Knight field goal.
