AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior defenseman John Adams scored two goals and freshman forward Brian Boyle added one goal and one assist to lead third-ranked Boston College to a 4-1 Hockey East victory over ninth-ranked Massachusetts before a record crowd of 7,113 fans in the Mullins Center.
Adams' two goals equaled his goal total from his previous 68 collegiate games. The Wayzata, Minn., resident netted two goals in 34 games in 2002-03 after going without a goal in 25 games as a freshman. Adams entered the game against the Minutemen without a point in nine games this season.
Adams scored the only goal of the opening period, beating UMass goalie Gabe Winer at 10:21. After Massachusetts (7-2-0, 4-2-0) evened the score with a power-play goal at 3:25 of the second period, BC answered with two goals to take a 3-1 advantage after two periods.
Boston College (6-2-2, 3-0-1 Hockey East) regained the lead on Adams' second goal, an even-strength tally at 6:28. Boyle and freshman Joe Rooney assisted on the go-ahead goal. Boyle doubled the BC margin with a power-play goal at 14:06. The 6-foot-7-inch freshman netted the rebound of a Ben Eaves shot.
Sophomore Stephen Gionta finished the scoring with a shorthanded, empty-net goal at 18:36 of the third period. The Eagles were killing a hitting-from-behind penalty, while UMass had pulled Winer in favor of an extra skater.
Boston College's defensive effort limited the host Minutemen to just 15 shots. Junior goaltender Matti Kaltiainen made 14 saves. Winer finished with 18 saves.
