CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The baseball team will hold game one of its third annual "Sonny Nictakis Fall World Series" on Monday afternoon.
The three game series is put on by Head Coach Pete Hughes every October, as an intra-squad "Maroon and Gold" scrimmage that wraps up fall practice. The two teams were drafted on Sunday night by team captains Ryan Leahy and Zach Keenan, and will play Monday, Thursday and Friday. Scores will be kept and the team with the most runs after three games of play will be the winner.
The annual scrimmage is named after Pete "Sonny" Nictakis, a former catcher for Boston College. Class of 1999 and former captain senior year, Nictakis died of Hodgkin's disease in August 2000. In 1997 he received the Boston College Baseball Team Leadership Award, and in 1998-99 served as president of the BIG EAST Athletic Advisory Council.
"We have our Maroon and Gold scrimmage to wrap up the fall workout after Sonny- a good way to remember a great kid," Coach Hughes said. "He was a big part of the school and the program."
This fall has been a great opportunity for the eight freshmen to warm up with returning players and gain some experience at the college level.
"Some kids use the fall to win jobs, some kids use it to make positional changes or experimental stuff and to develop the freshmen,' Coach Hughes said.
The Series will open Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the Eddie Pellagrini Diamond of Shea Field. Games two and three will also be at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Check back throughout the week for pictures and updates.
