CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College women's hockey team (7-11-3, 0-6-3 Hockey East) dropped a 5-4 decision to cross-town rival, Northeastern University (7-11-2, 3-5-1 HE), on Tuesday evening despite a flurry of activity in the last two minutes of the contest.
The Eagles came out of the locker room skating as if determined to earn their first Hockey East victory. Freshman Sarah Courtney netted a pass from Jessica Tychsen at 8:57. Minutes later, Jaclyn Kryzak scored her seventh of the season to put the Eagles up 2-0. Northeastern tallied one before the end of the frame, but the Eagles took the lead into the intermission.
The visitors dominated the second period to the tune of 4-0. After killing a penalty during which they allowed BC no shots on goal, the Huskies' offense was sparked. NU's Kim Greene notched two in the Huskies' strong play.
Boston College came back to life after the difficult second period, as Kerri Sanders scored just 55 seconds into the third while the Huskies were short a skater due to a penalty from the previous session. The Eagles dominated play, maintaining possession in the Northeastern zone and out-shooting the Huskies 14-6.
Still trailing by two, the Eagles caught a break with 1:57 remaining. BC was issued a penalty shot after an NU skater covered the puck in the crease. The Eagles' leading scorer, Alaina Clark, was given the puck for the chance, but netminder Chanda Gunn came up with a huge save. The Huskies did not escape yet, however, as they were penalized once more. With the extra man, the Eagles pulled Lisa Davis to gain the six on four advantage. Kryzak capitalized on the opportunity, for her second score of the game, to bring the Eagles within one, but time expired as they could not match the Huskies.
Davis and Gunn recorded 26 saves each in the effort.
Boston College travels to Hamden, Conn. for two games against the Quinnipiac Bobcats this weekend, and will return to Kelley Rink on Tuesday, Jan. 28 to square off against No. 1 Harvard University.
