
Volleyball Dominates in Opening Round of Eagle Challenge

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College volleyball team kicked off the 2002 Eagle Challenge with a win over Gardner-Webb University. The Eagles (6-5) defeated the Lady Bulldogs (1-12) three games to none in their home opener at Power Gymnasium on Friday afternoon.
Boston College was originally scheduled to play Wagner College at 7:00 Friday night. Due to undisclosed reasons, Wagner withdrew from the tournament. Tournament matches were rearranged, pitting Gardner-Webb against BC in the first match.
The Eagles struck first, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 30-17 in the first game. The game was close in the beginning, with a score of 11-10 at one point, but the Eagles never trailed and rallied to put the game away.
The Eagles led the second game by a score of 21-14, but buried the Bulldogs and won the second game 30-14 by scoring nine unanswered points behind freshman Christine Chandler's serve.
In the third game, Boston College jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead once again, but their opponents would not give up. They tied the game at 6-6. Boston College pulled away again behind Chandler's serve, but Garner-Webb held on strong, coming within two points at the mid-point (16-14). The Eagles kept their composure and dominated the rest of the game under the leadership of senior captain Kim Carlson.
Carlson played extremely well in the match, amassing 15 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, along with two service aces and one solo block. Chandler led the match with a career high four service aces. Freshman classmate Verena Rost set for 34 assists in the three-game match.
The Eagle Challenge will continue Saturday, September 21, 2002. Matches will be played at 1:30, 4:00 and 7:00 at Power Gymnasium. The University of Memphis will join Boston College and Gardner-Webb in the competition.
