Sixteen BIG EAST games, three games against Atlantic-10 foes and single contests against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12 highlight Boston College's 2002-03 men's basketball schedule. The schedule was released by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
The Eagles will host each of Boston's three other Division I basketball schools -- Boston University (Nov. 26), Harvard (Dec. 22) and Northeastern (Jan. 5). Boston College's non-league slate also includes a date with traditional rival Holy Cross in the Worcester Centrum on Dec. 1 and a meeting with Kent State in Cleveland's Gund Arena on Dec. 28. Both Holy Cross and Kent State earned 2002 NCAA Tournament berths.
The Eagles, under sixth-year head coach Al Skinner, will face nine teams that reached the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Because of the league's scheduling arrangement, Boston College will not play league foes Georgetown, Pittsburgh or Seton Hall this season.
After two exhibition contests, Boston College will open its season against St. Joseph's on Nov. 23 in Conte Forum. The two Jesuit institutions last met in the second round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament.
Boston College concludes its non-conference schedule on Jan. 16 with a game against North Carolina State in the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Raleigh, N.C. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
The Eagles are tentatively scheduled to appear on ESPN five times -- twice in non-league games and three times in conference contests. BC's consecutive road games against Massachusetts (Dec. 7) and Iowa State (Dec. 10) will both be shown on the national cable network. The Eagles' home dates against Notre Dame (Jan. 25), Villanova (March 3) and Connecticut (March 8) will also appear on ESPN. The BC-Connecticut game marks the conclusion of the regular season.
Boston College, which last season earned a 20-12 record and its second straight NCAA Tournament berth, returns four starters from the 2001-02 team.
