Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team opened the 2002 season with a 4-0 blanking of Colgate Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Boston College. With the win, Boston College improves to 1-0 overall. The Raiders fall to 0-1.
The hosts put three goals on the board in the first half, relying on the stick power of tri-captains Christy Zider (Barre, Vt.), Virginia Drozd (Richmond, Va.), and Kim French (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Putting forth a strong offensive attack, Zider cracked into the scoring column just over two minutes into the game. The 1-0 lead would hold until the 29:05 mark. Drozd and French scored back-to-back goals within a three minute period to close the half at 3-0.
In the second half, freshman Danielle Incropera (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched her first career goal, giving the Eagles the final 4-0 margin. Sophomore Lauren Schultz (New Milford, Conn.) collected two assists on the afternoon. BC peppered Colgate goalie Sara Corcoran with 26 shots. The Eagles took 14 penalty corners, to Colgate's five.
The Eagles will play their next three games at home. They will return to action Wednesday evening as they host Massachusetts in a 7 p.m. contest in Alumni Stadium.
