In a team vote, Boston College seniors Vinny Ciurciu (Paramus, NJ), Antonio Garay (Rahway, NJ) and Brian St. Pierre (Danvers, MA) have been named tri-captains of the 2002 Eagles football team. Head coach Tom O'Brien made the announcement at Friday's football media day as the team prepared for its first fall practice on Saturday morning.
Ciurciu, a 5-11, 240-pound linebacker, led BC in tackles last season with 87 (41 solos) in his first season as an Eagle after transferring from Clemson. He started all 11 games plus the Music City Bowl for the Eagles and enters fall camp as a preseason all-star candidate.
Garay, a 6-4, 290-pound defensive end, returns to the Eagle lineup after missing the final part of the 2001 season with a neck injury he suffered in the Notre Dame game. Even after missing several games, he finished as the sixth-leading tackler on the team with 57 stops and made nine tackles for a loss with five quarterback sacks.
St. Pierre, BC's 6-4, 217-pound quarterback, passed his way into the BC record books last year as a junior. His 25 passing touchdowns were tied as the second highest in school history while his 149 completions are tied as the 13th highest and his 279 attempts are the 12th-highest.
The Eagles will take the practice field for the first time on Saturday morning in preparation for their Aug. 31 season opener vs. Connecticut. BC will play seven home games in a 12-game season that includes contests against Stanford, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and defending national champion Miami.
