CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior shortstop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) was voted to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District First Team for softball. The all-district squad, including a first and second team, is chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Nominees to the Verizon Academic All-District Team must possess at least a 3.20 grade point average and be either a starter or important reserve on his or her respective athletic team. Those nominees selected to the district's first team are then placed on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America team.
Blumfield is a communications major in the College of Arts & Sciences. On the field, she is also an All-America candidate. She batted .445 this season (57-of-128) ranking her seventh in the nation. She also added 13 doubles, two triples and eight home runs. Blumfield holds 10 school records, and this year shattered her own marks for hitting, slugging percentage (.766) and on-base percentage (.535). An All-BIG EAST selection this year, she also had a .981 fielding percentage with only four errors in 52 games.
Blumfield has also gained national attention for her play. USA Softball recently included her among the 62 players invited to try out for the 2002 U.S. National Softball Team.
Boston College recently honored Blumfield for her combination of academics and athletics. At its recent All-Sports Banquet, Blumfield was honored as the Outstanding Junior Scholar-Athlete. She is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and has earned the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement in each of her three years at the Heights.
Blumfield is Boston College softball's fourth All-District member, joining Alexis Beckman (1996, 1997), Deb Nasitka (1997) and Laura Thompson (1997). So far in the 2001-02 season, Boston College has placed eight student-athletes on various Verizon Academic All-District teams. Blumfield joins Rachel Byars (women's basketball), Nicole Conway (women's basketball), Colleen Danaher (women's soccer), Brian Durkin (baseball), Brian Macchi (baseball), Elyse Meredith (women's soccer) and Brooke Shull (volleyball) on this year's teams.
The Eagles finished the season with a 26-26 overall record and an 11-9 mark in BIG EAST play.
