OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok. - Junior shortstop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) has become Boston College's first-ever softball player to earn All-American honors. She was voted to the national Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-America second team. She is the only BIG EAST player on the first- or second-team squads and one of three league players overall. The All-America teams were announced on Wednesday, May 22 at a banquet held in conjunction with the Women's College World Series.
Fifty-five players were named to the 2002 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-American first, second and third teams. All three teams were selected by NFCA-member NCAA Division I coaching representatives, based on nominations from the 2002 season.
After having a breakout season in 2001 where she set nine school records, Blumfield was even better in 2002. She batted .445 (57-for-128) while starting all 52 games at shortstop. She ranked in the nation's top ten in batting all season and is currently ninth in Division I. She tied the Boston College school record with 13 doubles and added eight homeruns. Blumfield batted in 37 runners and scored 26 more. She had a slugging percentage of .766 and an on-base percentage of .535, both marks that shattered her own school records. More impressive, Blumfield recorded a .981 fielding percentage at short this season, making only four errors in 207 chances.
Blumfield - already well honored this season - added to an impressive awards resume this season. She was a second team All-BIG EAST honoree and a first team NFCA All-Northeast Regional All-American. Academically, she was a Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District I first team member and now is now represented on the national Academic All-American ballot. She was also honored as Boston College's Outstanding Junior Scholar-Athlete at the school's annual All-Sports Banquet. Blumfield was also one of 62 players chosen nationally - both Olympian and collegiate - to tryout for the 2002 USA Softball national team.
Blumfield helped lead the Eagles to a 26-26 overall record and an 11-9 mark in BIG EAST games in 2002. The Eagles finished fifth in the conference standings.
