CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday afternoon by the conference office following his three-hit shut out against Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. He becomes the sixth Boston College player to receive a 2002 BIG EAST weekly award.
The freshman, who threw 124 pitches in Boston College's 2-0 victory over Virginia Tech, was masterful as he gave scattered three hits, walked two and struck out five batters. With the win, Shepard moved his overall record to 5-2 while lowering his ERA from 3.98 to 3.47.
Shepard and the Eagles will look to gain their first BIG EAST regular-season championship this weekend. Boston College and Notre Dame will tangle in a three-game series, which starts at 6:05 p.m. Friday in Notre Dame, Ind. The series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader, which begins at 12:05 p.m. Shepard is scheduled to pitch game three against Notre Dame.
Heading into the final weekend of conference play, Boston College, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech are all tied atop the standings with 15-8 records.
* For the first time during the 2002 season, Boston College is receiving votes into The Baseball Weekly/ESPN Top 25 College Coaches Poll. The two votes the Eagles are receiving were given by 41 Division I head baseball coaches representing the American Baseball Coaches Association.
