CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two members of the Boston College baseball team were named to the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District I Team. Seniors Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and Brian Durkin (Lowell, Mass.) were each named to the team, which is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Nominees to the Verizon Academic All-District Team must possess at least 3.20 grade average and be either a starter or important reserve on his or her respective athletic team. Those nominees selected to the district's first team are then placed on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America team.
Macchi is an elementary education major in the Lynch School of Education. He was just named Eagle of the Year, which is given annually to one male and one female student-athlete who is an outstanding citizen, leader, scholar and athlete. It is the most prestigious honor that the athletic department bestows upon a student athlete.
Besides his success in the classroom, Macchi has had a solid season for the Eagles, who are in search of their first ever BIG EAST championship. Macchi has started and played in all 45 games this season, as he has compiled a .298 average. He has 56 hits, 22 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 58 RBI and 32 runs scored. He was also named the first BIG EAST Player of the Week for the 2002 season.
Durkin is a history major in the College of Arts & Sciences. Durkin joins Macchi and three other Boston College players to be named BIG EAST Players of the Week in 2002. He leads the squad with 11 home runs this season, which gives him 26 for his career. His 26 career home runs places him fourth on the Boston College all-time home run list.
In 2002, Durkin is batting .277; however, his average has gone up .79 points since the start of the Georgetown series, which was back on April 14. The senior is enjoying an incredible run from the plate as the Eagles enter a critical series with Virginia Tech, which starts on Saturday. Over the last two weeks, Durkin has gone 16-for-26 (.615) with nine runs and 19 RBI.
Macchi, Durkin and the rest of the Boston College baseball team (27-18, 13-7 BIG EAST) will look to take over first place in the BIG EAST when they play Virginia Tech (26-22, 14-6 BIG EAST) in a three-game series starting on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Eagles are presently tied with Notre Dame for second place in the conference, only one game behind the Hokies. If the Eagles take two-of-three games from the Hokies and Notre Dame does not sweep Villanova, they will be in first place heading into the final weekend of BIG EAST action.
