Track Athletes Compete At Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - Several members of the Boston College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the prestigious Duke Invitational Friday and Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Leading the way for the women's team was junior Megan Guiney (Middletown, N.J.), who placed 10th in the 3,000-meter run. She finished with a time of 9:50.12 in the highly competitive event. She has been seeing her first competitive action the last two weeks since going down with an injury in the later part of the cross country season.
Sophomore Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) and junior Julie Spolidoro (Duxbury, Mass.) both had strong showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The two finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the grueling event. Donovan clocked a time of 10:48.49, while Spolidoro just finished behind with a time of 10:48.91. Freshman Melissa Sherman (Dennis, Mass.) turned in a solid time in the 800-meter run, as she finished the race in 2:14.63.
On the men's side, junior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and senior Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.) both competed in the 800-meter run. Mickle placed 15th in the event, as he turned in a time of 1:53.41. McKenzie finished the race with a time of 1:55.33, which was good enough for 34th place.
Sophomore Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass.) possibly had the strongest performance of the afternoon, as he placed 15th, out of 89 participants, with a time of 14:37.93. Junior Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.) was the final participant for Boston College, as he placed 29th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.86.
