Track Teams Place Second At Dartmouth Tri-Meet

HANOVER, N.H. - The Boston College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams finished second against Dartmouth and Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. The men's team finished with a final score of 74, which was second to Dartmouth's 111.50 points. On the women's side, the Eagles place second with a score of 71, while Dartmouth turned in 107 points. The meet was moved indoors due to poor weather in the Hanover area.
On the men's side, there were several strong performances. Freshman Geoff Atkins (Avon, Conn.) continued his strong season in the sprint events, as he placed first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Atkins turned in a time of 11.22 in the 100 and a time of 22.80 in the 200.
Junior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.) continued to be one of Boston College's strongest runners in the middle-sprint events. In the 400-meter dash, he placed first with a time of 50.44. Freshman Dan McIsaac (Natick, Mass.) earned a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run, as he finished in 1:55.64.
Sophomore Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass.) had a busy but successful afternoon for the Eagles, as he competed in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs. He placed second in the 5,000 and fourth in the 1,500 with times of 15:06.29 and 3:57.30, respectively. In the 110-meter hurdles, freshman Ryan Sullivan (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed second in the sprint event with a time of 16.55. He also placed second in the high jump, as he finished with a mark of six feet.
While only competing against one other runner, junior Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) turned in a sold time of 9:28.98 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 4x100-meter relay team edged out the Dartmouth and Plattsburgh teams, as the Eagles finished with a time of 44.02. Freshman Joe Makley (Campbell, Calif.) and senior Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.) rounded out the first-place finishers for Boston College, as they took first place in the pole vault and hammer throw competitions, respectively. Makley finished with a vault of 13'06.25", while Beirne threw the hammer 159'03.00".
On the women's side, senior Zoey O'Sullivan (Auburn, Maine), junior Nikki Pogue (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Rachel D'Amora (New Haven, Conn.) finished 1-2-3 in the 100-meter dash. The three finished with times of 12.72, 13.24 and 13.28, respectively.
Freshmen Saki Sugano (Bellevue, Wash.) and Megan Mara (Avon, Conn.) both had incredible showings in the pole vault competition, as they both finished with marks of 11'06.25". The 4x100-meter relay team cruised by Plattsburgh, as the Eagles' relay team finished with a time of 49.63 to Plattsburgh's 53.60.
The women's team had several runner-up finishes on Saturday. Junior Jennifer Vendetti (Franklin, Mass.) placed second in the 200-meter dash, as she turned in a time of 26.83. Junior Melissa Connell (Framingham, Mass.) turned in a time of 1:00.34 in the 400-meter dash.
Senior Sharon Van Tuyl (Portage, Mich.) placed second in the 3,000-meter run, as she turned in a time of 9:54.84. Sophomore Julie Heyde (Natick, Mass.) completed the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.00, and she placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5'01.75". Junior Megan Kearney (North Canton, Conn.) placed second in the discus and hammer throws. In the discus, she finished with a toss of 132'10.00" and in hammer throw, she finished with a mark of 136'10.00". Freshman Ann Marie Walsh (Boulder, Colo.) rounds out the second-place finishers, as she placed second in the long jump with a leap of 15'09.75".
The men's and women's track teams are back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Solomon Invitational in Dedham, Mass. Listed below is the order of events for this weekend's meet.
