Blumfield Among Nation's Best

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior short stop Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.) is ranked among the national Division I leaders in two offensive categories, according to the first official NCAA statistics release of the 2002 season. Blumfield is currently third in the nation in batting average (.488) and tied for 25th in doubles per game (0.32).
In batting, Blumfield is behind two UCLA players - senior catcher Stacey Nuveman (.543) and junior short shot Natasha Watley (.521). Ironically, the second-, third- and fourth-ranked batters are all junior short stops.
Since the release of the rankings - which include games played through Sunday, April 7 - Blumfield has raised her average to .500 (43-for-86) with a 4-for-6 performance in two games against Brown on Wednesday, April 10.
Last season, Blumfield set eight school records in offensive categories: batting average (.389), games played (55), games started (55), runs batted in (51), runs scored (39), home runs (14), slugging percentage (.745) and on-base percentage (.479).
She was also ranked among the final NCAA leaders in four categories: batting average (36th), home run (15th), runs batted in (17th) and slugging percentage (16th).
Boston College is currently 15-18 overall on the season. The Eagles will next face Seton Hall on Saturday, April 13 and St. John's on Sunday, April 14 in a pair of BIG EAST doubleheaders. Both days' games begin at noon on Shea Field.
