Track Members Compete At ECAC And IC4A Championships

BOSTON - Members of the Boston College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (women) and ICAAAA (men) Championships Saturday and Sunday and the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Northeastern University.
Junior Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.) had the strongest showing for Boston College during the competition. She placed fourth in the one-mile run, finishing with a time of 4:54.94. She wrapped up the indoor season with the Eagles' second fastest time in the event, which was only three seconds behind freshman Maria Cicero's one-mile mark, which she set against Boston University and Providence College.
Sophomores Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) and Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) both had strong showing for the Eagles. Donovan placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a season-best time of 9:46.00. Kramer just missed a season-best time with her 13th-place result in the 5,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 17:44.59.
Freshman Saki Sugano (Bellevue, Wash.) just missed setting the school record once again in the pole vault, as she finished with a mark of 11'03.75". Sugano set the school record at the New England Championships with a vault of 11'04.50". Freshman Melissa Sherman turned in a time of 1:15.30 in the 500-meter run, which placed her fourth in the heat.
On the men's side, senior Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.) turned in the best time of the season in the 800-meter run for Boston College, as she finished with a time of 1:53.09. The previous best time this season came from junior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who had run a 1:53.91 at the New England Championships. Mickle also competed in the 400 at the ICAAAA's, as he turned in a time of 1:53.95.
Sophomore Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass.) took part in the 3,000-meter run, placing ninth in his heat with a time of 8:37.49. The final member of the men's team to compete was junior Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.), who placed seventh in his one-mile run heat with a time of 4:16.57.
Both the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams kick off their seasons on March 30 when they compete in the Northeastern Invitational in Dedham, Mass.
