We have been on the road forever now and our first home game of the season is approaching. You know you've been gone too long when you forget the location of some of your classes and have to look them up online just to make sure. I'm usually the type of student who tries to never miss class, so when we travel all the time I really have to focus harder and work to keep up. Mandatory study hall hours are practically my best friend on the road. I think it refreshed us all to be able to come back from spring break and enjoy an actual full week of class and a regular routine.
We seemed to put our long road trips behind us as we headed to Hofstra University in New York. With only the thoughts of our home video in our heads and sweeping the weekend on our minds, we set out to start our East Coast journey. Little did we know that in one weekend alone we would claim back-2-back tournament titles and that Diesel Daly would really hit a home run. Yes, it was quite a shocking weekend. But we all had something to prove and each and every one of us wanted to accomplish our goal of an undefeated weekend.
Motivation first set in the moment we arrived at the softball field and found out that Boston University decided not to show up and play due to their strong beliefs in the Weather Channel's prediction for the chance of rain. Because of this slight last minute set back, the tournament had to be rearranged and our game that was intended to start at 9:30 a.m. was pushed back to 12 p.m. At least our team is blessed with wonderful morning people because we ended up losing out on two extra hours of sleep that we all could have used. That didn't stop us however and we were able to refocus and take two games from Hofstra on Saturday and sweep our two games on Sunday as well.
We saw many great things coming from everyone. Our pitching staff was on fire, controlling each game the entire time. Our defense looked sharp with Kimmy Ryan even leaving her circle to make a nice catch on a fly ball. Offensively we out-hit each opponent and saw clutch hits from Jennifer Asbury, Elyse Meredith, Michelle "Diesel" Daly, Jacqui Goodchild, and many, many more. It may have been cold outside but our bats were hot and this weekend is sure to carry us strong into next week's Big East play.
As we speak, our field is being prepped and ready by only the best and we are all very anxious to step foot onto it. This Saturday we host Virginia Tech to open up Big East action so put the homework away, take the day off of work, grab the kids, and come on out to Shea Field as the 2002 Big East Softball season gets underway. The first pitch will be thrown at 12 p.m.
