MIAMI, Fla.-The Boston College women's rowing team participated in a scrimmage against the University of Miami to open their spring season, on Saturday Mar. 9. The Eagles and Hurricanes competed in a series of varsity and novice races. All crews raced one 2,000-meter event, two 1,000-meter events, and three 500-meter pieces.
The Eagles returned to the water after three months of dry land training and did their best to find their sea legs after the long layoff.
Boston Colleges first Varsity Eight boat defeated Miami's top boat in each of the six events. Most notably, the Eagles defeated the Hurricanes in the 2,000-meter piece by six seconds, a race that Miami had won by two seconds last season.
The Hurricanes were able to get the best of the Eagles in the second Varsity Eight races and the Varsity Four events, but only by the narrowest of margins. The Four boat competed very hard, but fell short by only one second to the host school in half of the pieces.
The Novice team, most affected by the long layoff, had not rowed since November, but had a strong showing. Although the team lost each of its pieces, they rowed very competitively with a strong Miami Novice team.
The team will return to action on Sat., Mar. 30, when they compete against Harvard University.
