A friend once told me that life is not a race, but rather a marathon. This is exactly how I look at our season. Playing in Texas taught us all that we need to step it up both physically and mentally if we are going to play anywhere near our potential.
As we headed to Georgia, we knew we wanted to turn things around and get some more wins. However, things didn't go as well as we had hoped. The first day of tournament play our bats fell asleep and we couldn't seem to find an answer against Tennessee. We found our bats in the next game against Georgia State, however it was our defense and pitching that struggled. In our last game against 16th-ranked Iowa, we seemed to show what BC is really about.
We were down 7-1 going into the fifth inning when, with two outs, we just exploded for five runs. Thanks to clutch singles, a double by Erin Mackey and one of the most memorable home runs I will ever see by Elyse Meredith, we almost tied the game. Elyse gave us inspiration especially as she was rounding third on her home run trot and completely tripped over the base and fell flat on her face. Sorry buddy, but that was just the greatest thing any of us had ever witnessed. It was a great hit though.
The game was called due to darkness and our hopes of an upset were shattered when we couldn't complete the game. We left the field feeling good however because we had finally seen just how powerful our team could be.
Sunday's games were the true test to see if we could win them both and head home on a positive note. We did just that when we beat Drexel in extra innings, giving our coaches heart attacks, and then coming back to win over Ball State by the eight-run rule in six innings. The wins felt good and showed that we are right there. We are on the edge of something great and soon it'll happen.
We have a marathon season left and, with time, everything will come into place. For now we just keep up the fight and look to show Arizona State and Arizona that BC is for real.
Congratulations to Erin Mackey and Lisa Fischer on their first collegiate home runs. Those will be the first of many. Arizona, we're coming for ya!
