Track Squads Conclude Stint At BIG EAST Indoor Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Boston College women's and men's indoor track and field teams concluded the 2002 BIG EAST Championships on Sunday in the Carrier Dome. The women finished in 11th place with a score of 21.50, while the men finished last in the team standings (14th) with only one point. Notre Dame took home the women's title, finishing with a score of 112, while Connecticut won the men's championship, finishing with a score of 136.50.
Freshman Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) turned in the best performance for Boston College over the two-day event. Cicero, who has automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run, finished second in the 3,000-meter run. She turned in a time of 9:34.19, which is a NCAA provisional qualifying time. Cicero finished 14 seconds behind West Virginia's Megan Metcalfe, who finished with a time of 9:20.87.
Freshman Ann Marie Walsh (Boulder, Colo.) turned in a solid performance for the Eagles in the long jump, as she finished with a mark of 17'10.75", which was good enough for 10th place. Sophomore Jennifer Donovan turned in a season-best time in the one-mile run, finishing with a time of 5:06.63. Her previous-best time came at the Yale Classic, where she finishing with a time of 5:08.30.
On the men's side, the 4x800-meter relay team of seniors Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.), James Mann (Sharon, Mass.), juniors Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.) earned an ICAAAA Championship qualifying time by finishing with a time of 7:44.96. The qualifying time of the ICAAAA's is 7:51.00.
The women's indoor track and field team is back in action Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, at the New England Championships in Medford, Mass., while the men's team also competes in the New England Championships, the same two days, in Boston.
