CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team begins the 2002 season at 12 p.m. Saturday when it takes on New England rival Delaware State University in Davidson, N.C. Following their contest with the Hornets, the Eagles hit the field again to take on Davidson College at 3 p.m. Boston College's weekend series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday against Davidson.
The Eagles enter the season tabbed to finish sixth in the BIG EAST by the conference coaches. Boston College is led by head coach Pete Hughes, who is entering his fourth season at the Heights. Before Hughes' arrival to Chestnut Hill, the most wins by a Boston College team was 23 (1991). In his first season, the Eagles won 26 games, which was then followed by an all-time best 35 victories and finally 29 wins in 2001.
Prior to Hughes' arrival, Boston College's baseball team's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) was 166. Following his first season with the Eagles, the team's RPI jumped to 79th in the country. In 2000, the year the team won 35 games, BC's RPI jumped to its highest point ever of 69. While last year the Eagles' RPI slipped into the 70's, Hughes continues to point the program in the right direction.
This weekend's three-game set begins a 17-game road stretch for Boston College, which includes trips to Berkeley, Calif., Fort Myers, Fla., Homestead, Fla. and Bradenton, Fla. The Eagles first home series is March 23-24 when they host BIG EAST rival Rutgers University at Shea Field.
