Bessette Receives Scanlan Award

Boston College senior Safety Doug Bessette (Raynham, MA) received the Thomas F. Scanlan Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a BC football player, at the team's annual Scanlan Awards Banquet Sunday afternoon at the Sheraton Hotel in Needham.
Bessette has played in 48 straight games for the Eagles at strong safety. He finished the 2002 season as the team's fourth-leading tackler with 71 (53 solos) and led the team in tackles for a loss with nine. He also had two fumble recoveries on the year.
The Scanlan Award is named for Tom Scanlan '20, one of the most beloved football alumni of Boston College who was a courageous and inspiring leader on the gridiron and an outstanding scholar in the classroom. The winner of the annual Varsity Club trophy, the Thomas F. Scanlan Award, is the senior football player who best exemplifies the ideals of Tom Scanlan: scholar, athlete, gentleman and friend.

-Scout Team Award - Leonard Bennett, Eric Boatwright, Ryan Mattison.
-William J. Flynn Award (season's most valuable player) - Derrick Knight.
