LOWELL, Mass. - UMass-Lowell used five unanswered goals in the third period to earn an 8-4 HOCKEY EAST victory over Boston College on Saturday night. Senior captain Jeff Giuliano gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead at 1:04 of the third before the River Hawks exploded for the win before 6,796 at Tsongas Arena.
Boston College (12-8-2, 5-6-1 HEA) scored first, gaining a lead in the season series for the first time all year. For the third game in a row, freshman Dave Spina scored the Eagles' first goal. He took a long pass from Giuliano and skated in for the breakaway score at 12:43 of the first period. Bill Cass also assisted on the goal.
UMass-Lowell (16-3-1, 8-2-1 HEA) quickly tied the score at 1-1 at 14:21 of the first. Ed McGrane banged in a rebound of a Mark Concannon shot as Steve Slonina also assisted on the goal.
The River Hawks then took a 2-1 lead to open the second period. Josh Reed scored off a feed from Yorick Treille and Dan Fontas at 1:36.
Freshman Ryan Murphy evened the score at 2-2 at 6:16 with the first shorthanded goal of his career. He broke up a point-to-point pass at the BC blueline and skated in alone on UML's Cam McCormick for the goal.
McGrane put the River Hawks ahead once again at 9:57 of the second when he circled around the back of the net and scored with a high shot over Eagle netminder Tim Kelleher. Slonina and Darryl Green assisted on the goal.
J.D. Forrest logged a 4x3 power-play goal at 13:11 of the second period to knot the score heading into the second intermission. Brett Peterson assisted on the goal after sending in a pass from the blue line to Forrest for the rising one-timer.
Giuliano's goal - at 2:36 of the third from Spina and Ryan Shannon - put the Eagles up 4-3, but goals by Ken Farrell, Anders Strome (power play), Green, Slonina (empty net) and Kevin Kotyluk gave the River Hawks the four-goal margin of victory.
McCormick made 21 saves in the win, including eight in the third period. Kelleher made 16 saves in the loss. For the night, the Eagles outshot UML 25-24, including an 11-1 margin on the power play.
