CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sixteen BIG EAST Conference games and non-conference home contests against Duke, Iowa State, Massachusetts and Penn State highlight Boston College's 2001-02 men's basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
The Eagles will make at least 10 appearances on national television, with the possibility of additional telecasts being added. BC is currently slated to appear on ESPN six times, on CBS three times, and on ABC once.
After two November exhibition contests, the Eagles will open their season against Boston University in Conte Forum on November 18. Seven of BC's first nine contests are home games. Included among the early-season non-league games in Conte Forum are dates with Big 10 member Penn State (Nov. 24), Atlantic 10 member Massachusetts (Dec. 8) and Big 12 member Iowa State (Dec. 11). The BC-UMass game will mark the seventh annual Commonwealth Classic. Last year, Boston College claimed the classic crown with a 74-65 win over the Minutemen in Amherst, Mass.
The Eagles close their first month of action with a November 28 game against Atlantic 10 member St. Bonaventure in the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. BC then returns to action on Dec. 1 against Big 10 member Michigan in Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Boston College will play three games in the Rainbow Classic from Dec. 20-22. The Eagles open the tournament against Miami (Ohio), and will face either Georgia or Arkansas State the following day.
Boston College opens its BIG EAST schedule on Dec. 31 against Seton Hall in East Rutherford, N.J. The Eagles then host Pittsburgh in the BIG EAST home opener on January 5.
Boston College will play 16 league contests in 2001-02. The BIG EAST Conference will again consist of two seven-team divisions. Each team will meet each divisional opponent on a home-and-home basis, and will play four games -- two at home and two on the road -- against teams from the other division. Joining Boston College in its division are Connecticut, Miami, Providence, St. John's, Villanova and Virginia Tech. In games against cross-division opponents, BC will meet Georgetown and Pittsburgh at home and Seton Hall and Syracuse on the road. BC will not play Notre Dame, Rutgers or West Virginia in regular-season action.
