BOSTON - Senior captain Chris Cleary scored in the 85th minute to give Boston College a 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Boston University on Saturday at Nickerson Field. With the win, the Eagles improved to 5-2-0 overall on the season, while the Terriers fell to 4-3-0 overall. It was BC's first game without junior forward Casey Schmidt, the team's leading scorer and the 2000 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, who will miss the remainder of the season with broken bones in his eye area.
After a scoreless first half in which Boston University outshot the Eagles, 8-2, BC came out and dominated the second half. They outshot the Terriers 10-3 in the final 45 minutes of action.
Martin Cantillo sparked the scoring play, sending a pass out of the backfield to Ramon Smith who beat several Terrier defenders and saved the ball from going out over the end line. He sent in a cross about 16-yards out, which BU keeper Matt Smith attempted to clear but missed, and Cleary knocked it in the goal past a diving defender.
Eagle keeper Danny Caruso recorded his second shut out of the season, making four saves in the win. Smith made eight saves for BU. Boston College outshot its hosts, 12-11, on the game.
The Eagles will next face Villanova in a BIG EAST match-up on Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Newton Campus Field at noon. BC's women's soccer team will complete the day's home doubleheader, taking on Connecticut at 2:30 p.m.
