CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.) of the men's soccer team will miss the remainder of the 2001 season after suffering a complex fracture in his eye area, including the orbit and zygomatic arch, on September 26 in a game against Harvard. In the first half, Schmidt challenged the Harvard goalkeeper for a ball and suffered the injury in a mid-air collision with the goalkeeper's hip.
A team captain, Schmidt led the Eagles in scoring this season, recording five goals and one assist in six games. He was the 2000 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and was selected by the league's coaches as the preseason favorite for the award this season. He was also an preseason honorable mention All-America choice by collegesocer.com and a preseason third-team All-American by College Soccer News.
In 39 career matches, Schmidt has scored 24 goals and added six assists for 54 points. He currently stands in a fifth-place tie in the Boston College career scoring record and in fourth place on the career goal scoring record. As a freshman, he was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection and last season was a first team All-New England honoree.
"We are very glad that Casey is fine - his injury could have been much worse," head coach Ed Kelly said. "It's a set-back for him, but he'll recover and next season pick up right where he left off. The entire team is focused on coming together to continue with the progress it's made this year. We'll play the rest of the season for him, but there will be a void up front where Casey has been for the past two years."
