One down, 16 to go. Our first match against Big East rival Syracuse was a complete success in so many ways. After coming off of a strong pre-season, we were eager to go out and capture a convincing win. The final score posted 5-1. Throughout my career at Boston College, this was the first time we had tallied five goals in a single match. On Wednesday, September 5, we will face St. Francis (NY) and hope to continue the same scoring momentum and mentality.
The man of the match last Friday was undoubtedly Adam Pfeifer. Adam absolutely tore apart the Syracuse defenders and opened up plenty of space for the rest of us to create strong scoring chances. He scored his first two goals of his collegiate career and added an assist. Adam has the potential to be one of the top strikers in the entire country if he continues to play the way he has been performing as of late. In practice he is working extremely hard and consistently putting the ball in the back of the net.
I am expecting to be heavily marked this season in Big East competition and with an additional scoring threat up top, Adam will definitely relieve some of the defensive pressure. As a pair, it is going to be very difficult for the opposition to contain us from scoring multiple goals in a match.
Recently, the coaching staff cut down the team numbers to 22 players. Every player has something to contribute to the team. Our last practice was probably the strongest session I had witnessed in the past three years. We were completely flying. The pace of the game was abnormally fast and the work rate was tremendous. Some great goals were scored and guys were committing hard tackles. These are the quality of practices that we must continue if we wish to re-capture the Big East Title.
Going into Wednesday's game against St. Francis, we are confident we can come out with a good win and continue the momentum into Saturday's game against Seton Hall. This week is huge. We are currently ranked 15th the country by the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America), the highest our program has been in years. We need to show the rest of the nation that we in fact belong there and take care of business this week against our opponents.
