A 5-1 victory marked our first outing on the Newton Campus this year. Our home opener was so much fun. Every person on the team got into the action as our front runners - Adam Pfeifer and Casey Schmidt - scored two goals each. In front of a huge crowd, our team was so excited to show the BC community what the soccer team was capable of.
There is certain pressure that exists at the beginning of each session, especially if you just won the BIG EAST championship. You could feel the relief throughout the team when we began dominating our first game. The pressure began to fade a little more after every goal.
There is also some individual pressure that is involved with being a top collegiate athlete. I think Casey, a preseason All-American, probably had even a bit more pressure that the rest of us since he was voted so high in the preseason polls. He handled it very well with a two-goal, first-game outing.
The same goes for Adam, who has not yet shown the BIG EAST what he's capable of .. and he's capable of SO much. The pressure for him is proving that he belongs among the league's elite forwards and, indeed, he does. A two-goal game to open the season must have felt great for him.
It was a perfect start for the whole team, but it was just a start. Our hopes for success extend much further than one game. So it's back to practice and preparing for our next game.
With that said, our team is looking to play well every single game. It was delightful to see that our first practice after winning on Friday was he most intense and competitive our team has had since I've been at BC. I hope it carries over into our games this week. We wouldn't mind a couple more victories at all.
