WEDNESDAY'S GAME
Boston College will travel to Hartford on Wednesday, Sept. 19 for a 7 p.m. contest after a 10-day lay-off. The game was added to both teams' schedules after the national tragedy last week. The Eagles had two games cancelled (against No. 13 Ohio State and No. 16 Penn State at the Penn State Nike Classic), as did Hartford (against San Francisco and Sienna at the UMass Soccer Classic), due to the unfortunate events of Sept. 11.
BC enters the game with a 2-1-0 overall record. BC opened the season with two wins over Syracuse (5-1) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (1-0), before falling to No. 18 Seton Hall, 2-1, in the team's last game. Junior Casey Schmidt leads the Eagles in scoring with four goals. He ranks among the nation's leaders in both goals per game and points per game. Freshman Adam Pfeifer has scored two goals and added an assist, while junior Bobby Thompson has scored a goal and as assist.
Hartford also enters the game with a 3-1-0 overall record. The team won its first three games of the season against Sacred Heart (7-1), Central Connecticut (2-0) and Massachusetts (2-1), before falling in its last game to Quinnipiac (3-1). Freshman Alon Lubezka leads the team in scoring with three goals. Senior Marcin Just and junior Asaf Lubezky each have tallied two goals for the Hawks.
LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday, Sept. 8, the 15th-ranked Eagles traveled to 18th-ranked Seton Hall, and suffered their first loss of the season, falling 2-1. After having an apparent goal by Adam Pfeifer called back when an Eagle attacker was offside, Boston College finally took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Casey Schmidt powered through two defenders to score the goal after receiving a serve down the wing from Martin Cantillo. Seton Hall came out strong in the second half, out-shooting the Eagles 11-5 in the stanza. BC had several chances to add to the lead early in the half, but unlucky breaks kept the ball out of the net. Seton Hall tied the score in the 66th minute, then took the lead in the 85th minute. BC had three late chances to tie the score in the closing minutes. The Pirates made two goal-line defensive saves and the Eagles had Neil Krause's goal called back on an offside call in the 90th minute.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Division I NSCAA/adidas national rankings were suspended this week in light of the sheer number of cancelled Division I games last week. In the last poll released on Sept. 10, BC fell out of the rankings after the loss to Seton Hall. The Eagles were the fourth highest Also Receiving Votes team in the poll. In the other national polls, the Eagles are ranked 25th in the College Soccer News Division I poll. The team is not ranked in either the Soccer America or media poll.
In the New England regional rankings, the Eagles are tied with Northeastern for third place, behind Connecticut (first) and Fairfield (second).
