Five Earn BIG EAST And BC Academic Honors

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Five Boston College softball players - Cara Blumfield, Alison Erbig, Summer Jarratt, Elyse Meredith and Brooke Shull - were named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars, in an announcement made by the league. To be eligible, student-athletes must earn a varsity letter and earn a 3.0 grade point average over both semesters of the school year.
Blumfield, a sophomore communication major in the College of Arts & Science, set eight offensive school records this season, including recording a .398 batting average. She ranked among NCAA Division I leaders in four categories: batting, home runs, slugging percentage and runs batted in. She was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on May 7. Blumfield is a native of West Hills, Calif.
Erbig, a sophomore general management major in the Carroll School of Management, started 54 of 55 games in 2001, splitting time between left field and first base. She batted .302 overall and .407 with runners in scoring position. He managed a .984 fielding position ,mainly at first base, and drove in 15 runners while scoring 27 runs herself. Erbig is a native of Middletown, N.J.
Jarratt, an economics major in the College of Arts & Sciences, graduated in May after a four-year starting career on the field as a catcher and third baseman. As a junior she started all 45 games behind the plate and accumulated a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. As a senior, she batted .295 and set the BC school record for walks in a season with 27. Jarratt is from Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Meredith, a freshman in the College of Arts & Sciences, played sparingly in the infield last season. She came in as a pinch hitter on numerous occasions. On one occasion against 22nd-ranked Massachusetts, she came up in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit the game-winning home run over straight-away center field. Meredith is from Basking Ridge, N.J.
Shull, a junior history major in the College of Arts & Sciences, is a two-sport athlete at the Heights splitting time between the volleyball and softball teams. Last season, Shull posted the seventh-best earned run average in a season at BC with her 1.53 mark and 10-3 record. She threw four shut outs and combined with other pitchers in three other games. Shull is from San Diego, Calif.
In addition to the BIG EAST honors, all five student-athletes were also honorees of the Boston College Athletic Director's Award for Academic Acheivement.
The softball team closed the 2001 season on a six-game winning streak en route to a 31-24 overall record. The 31 marked the third-highest season win total in school history.
