Men's Soccer Closes Exhibition Season With 3-0 Win

NEWTON, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team closed out its exhibition season with a 3-0 win over New Hampshire at the Newton Campus Field on Saturday afternoon. The different Eagles scored as BC shut out its second opponent in three games.
Sophomore Ramon Smith put BC on the board first in the 14th minute when he collected a pass in front from classmate Adam Pfeifer. Freshman Bill Arnualt sent in a long pass down the right wing from midfield, where Pfeifer collected it and put it on the goal mouth for Smith.
Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Casey Schmidt gave BC a 2-0 lead in the 45th minute as he gathered a long pass down the left wing and was in alone against the New Hampshire keeper. Off a goal kick, Eagle goalkeeper Danny Caruso made a short pass to freshman back Guy Melamed who send Schmidt in along the side.
After the half, the two teams agreed on two 25-minute quarters. In the second timeframe, junior Zach Bouchard scored BC's last goal in the 80th minute. Sophomore Gabe Margolis intercepted a Wildcat pass and set up Bouchard one-on-one with the keeper. After the New Hampshire goalie committed, Bouchard beat him to the left for the wide-open score.
Caruso made two saves in the Eagles' shutout. Ben Utter made two saves for New Hampshire. BC out-shot UNH 17-10 on the game.
Boston College will officially open the 2001 season on Friday, Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. against Syracuse in a BIG EAST match. The game will be played at the Newton Campus Field.

Pfeifer finished the three-game exhibition season as the team's leading scorer with two goals and one assist for five points. Three players - Schmidt, Smith and Arnault - each tallied three points. Schmidt and Smith both scored one goal and added one assist, while Arnualt's points all came on assists. Chris Cleary scored one goal, while Melamed and Caruso each added one assist.
